I started playing snooker in 1989. Then, it was without any coaching or proper training. My interest in the game drove me to look for formal training and in 2002, i went for the NCAP level 1 (technical) snooker coaching course. My game improved and I soon took the NCAP level 1 (theory) conducted by Singapore Sports Council(SSC) as well.
Despite having been certified as a coach, my coaching career began quite unexpectedly in 2004 when Miss Tan from Toa Payoh SAFRA approached me to coach a group of teenagers who frequented the centre. Thereafter, my coaching path evolved further to different snooker centres, country clubs, the civil service club, schools, corporate organizations, and even MediaCorp. I even had students flying in from Malaysia and Brunei for lessons.
Through the years, my mode of coaching ranged from individual lessons to group training sessions involving as many as 30 students. Also, their ages range from 11 to 70, total beginners to experienced players.
Many think that coaching is incessant giving but the truth is I too have received and grown in this journey too. Over the years, I have benefitted from learning to address different challenges faced by my students. The privilege of being a national player and being exposed to experiences overseas has made coaching easier for me.
I do not employ any specific strategic to attract people to me for coaching, except to employ simple examples that everyone can understand and sharing of my personal match experiences.I simply love seeing my student improve and play this wonderful classic sport correctly with ethics and style…this is my greatest reward in coaching!
